EDGARD, LA -- Coming into the season, the St. James Wildcats knew that in order to fully restore St. James football to its traditional standards of success, they were going to have to take it one step at a time.  Tonight, in the regular-season opener at West St. John, the Wildcats may have fallen back a step on their quest as they go down in defeat at West St. John 20-6.

The Rams of West St. John made an early statement and played 'refuse to lose' style football.  St. James never seemed to match back.

In the entire Jamboree last week at Hahnville, the St. James defense had only 1 miss-tackle.  Tonight, on the game's second play alone, the Wildcats had 3 miss-tackles.  The Ram running back made his way to open field and sprinted up the gut for a 65-yard score.  The Rams went for 2 and picked it up to take an 8-0 lead at the 11:07 mark in the first quarter.

A stunned Wildcat team couldn't find anything on offense.

Dominating field position, West. St. John took advantage again later in the half when they scored on a quarterback-keeper with 4:02 left in the half.  The extra point was no good, and the Rams enjoyed a 14-0 lead.

The Rams picked up one last score when they took in a 9-yard run early in the second half.  Another missed extra point gave the Rams a 20-0 lead at the 9:59 mark in the third quarter.

Though it was too late, discouragement and disappointment makes it easy to miss a positive fact that a badly struggling Wildcat offense did show some improvement towards the end of the game.  Also, the defense stiffened up and didn't allow any more points when they had every opportunity to give up totally.

The Wildcat offense finally began moving the ball and it would be Lester Verret capping off the drive when took it in from 1-yard out.  The extra point was no good making the score 20-6 at the 11:23 mark in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcat offense would get the ball back with 5:26 left in the game at their own 12-yard line and actually moved the ball up-field but would run out of downs around the Ram 40-yard line.

The game ended with a 20-6 score.

While tonight was a step backward, can the Wildcats turn it around into two steps forward towards returning St. James football to its standards?  St. James will get that opportunity this Friday evening when the Wildcats will begin a tough 4-game home streak beginning with Westgate.
