Wildcats get going late in scrimmage

2010 ST. JAMES, LA -- Although late in the scrimmage, a
series of 3 offensive plays finally seemed to turn things around for a St.
James team who opened up very tense and shaky. First, a dropped pass that would have gone
for a touchdown, then a miss-block that would have led to a touchdown run,
and finally, a 50-yard pass play that scored a touchdown for the Wildcats. After last year's season, St. James realized it was time
to go back and rebuild from foundation-on-up putting an emphasis on
fundamentals and technique. Tonight
was their first time playing against another opponent. The very good Capitol Lions, a Class-2A
Semi-finalist, provided a stiff challenge. St. James began the scrimmage portion on first-team
defense and on the very first play of the scrimmage, a Wildcat defender
missed an interception by inches -- however, the Capitol defender caught the
ball. A few plays later, Capitol
punched it in on a 21-yard run. The
Wildcat defense played better but still gave up one more score during the
scrimmage portion. During the second-team defense portion for St. James,
the Wildcats held Capitol out of the end zone and also recovered two fumbles. The St. James first-team offense took the field and
literally couldn't seem to move one inch in the positive direction. Finally, fullback Lester Verret ended the
drought when he came through on a 9-yard run. In the quarter portion of the scrimmage, Capitol
capitalized on a Wildcat turnover and scored on a 27-yard pass play. Another miss-interception, only by inches,
for the Wildcats. The extra point was
good giving Capitol a 7-0 lead. Capitol got the ball back after a quick three-and-out,
however Wildcat LaRohn Cambre quickly got the ball back for St. James with an
interception. St. James finally began moving the ball a little more
consistently. Tight End Blake Joseph
got behind defenders but dropped a sure touchdown pass. On the very next play, running back LaRohn
Cambre found the corner, and only had one defender to deal with. The miss-block prevented Cambre from
reaching the sidelines in what would have likely have been a touchdown
run. On the next play, quarterback
Shaquille Narcisse went back to the tight end Blake Joseph, who again got
behind the defense. This time, Joseph
hauled in the pass and scored. The play was good for 50-yards. St. James missed the extra point making it
7-6. Capitol came back on offense and the Wildcat defense
again missed out on an interception opportunity, leading to another Capitol
touchdown. The quarter ended with a
14-6 score in favor of Capitol. St. James' lone dominance of the night came during the
10-yard goal line drill. On the first play from the goal line, the St. James
offensive line beat Capitol's defensive line.
Solid blocking allowed quarterback Ben Falgoust time to find an open
Blake Joseph in the end zone for the touchdown. On the second play in the drill, again from the 10-yard
line, the Wildcat offensive line again won.
Fullback Christian Verret found the hole and blasted up the middle for
another Wildcat touchdown. The St. James defense shut out Capitol in four plays
from the 10-yard line during their portion of the goal line drill. Both teams wrapped up the night with a few punt plays. After the game Coach Gaille stressed to his Wildcats
that it took too long to show that they finally got tired of being pushed
around. "When we finally fought back, things began going our way,"
Coach Gaille said. "We have to
find a way to play like that for a whole game and it's up to each one of you
to accomplish that. For 75% of the
night, we were nowhere near competing." The Wildcats will now move on to preseason test number-2
when they travel next Thursday evening for their annual Jamboree battle
against Hahnville. Hahnville, like
Capitol, should provide the Wildcats another difficult challenge. |
