ST. JAMES, LA -- Wildcat Jaleel Steib scored every point on the scoreboard and the St. James defense played like the name on the front of their jersey as the St. James Wildcats picked up their first win of the season in a 26-0 Homecoming victory over the Brusly Panthers.

After a 4-game road trip, "Homecoming" could not have meant more for St. James.  The victory brings St. James to 1-5 for the season.  However, the bigger picture is that tonight's opening district win places St. James at 1-0 in their quest for the District Championship.

Off-and-on light showers and a decent amount of wind provided for a wet, but cool, evening of football.  St. James received to open the game and marched down the field on a scoring drive that took 4:41 off the clock.  Wildcat fullback Jaleel Steib found a seem in the middle and hit it for a 16-yard touchdown run.  Steib kicked his own extra point to give St. James a 7-0 lead.

The Wildcat defense then took the field and looked a little shaky at first.  While not pretty, the defense was effective and forced the Panthers to a punt on their first drive.

A few drives later, Jaleel Steib scored his second of the night when he slid around and scored on a 17-yard run.  The extra point hit the cross bar, thus the score was now 13-0 at the 10:45 mark in the second quarter.

Late in the first half, Brusly drove the ball into Wildcat territory to around the 30-yard line.  However, the Wildcat defense would come up big when linebacker Christian Verret intercepted a pass and returned it to the Panther 40-yard line with 42 seconds to go in the half.

Unsure, and not being fully confident, about whether the Wildcat offense could go 40-yards and score in less than 42 seconds was put to rest by a returning Wildcat, Larohn Cambre.  Cambre's first run of the season would be a 36-yard run down to the 4-yard line.  With 18 seconds left before half, Jaleel Steib picked up his third score of the night when he blasted in from 2 yards out.  The extra point was good making it 20-0 going into halftime.

The Wildcat offense looked plain, and a little sloppy, in the second half, but the Wildcat defense was now starting to do something they have not been able to do much, if any, of this year, and that is create havoc for the opponent.

The Wildcats caused fumbles and even got an interception from Jabari Ambrose playing the defensive-tackle position.  It would be a fumble recovery that led to the last touchdown by the Wildcat offense.

With 5:34 left in the game, Jaleel Steib punched in his fourth score of the night when he blasted in on a 2-yard run.  A misplaced extra point led to the kick never getting off, thus the score was 26-0.

The Wildcats' second defense then came in and forced Brusly out of downs before the Wildcat second offense ran out the clock to pick up the 26-0 victory.

St. James improves to 1-0 in district and will hit the road again for 2 weeks before returning home for their final 2 games of the regular season.  The Wildcats will play their second district game next Friday night at Livonia.

NOTABLES

Jaleel Steib scoring every single point in a shutout performance and then coming up with as many as 26 points is something has likely never been done before in school history.
