Wildcats find lows and highs in spring scrimmage

2009 SCOTLANDVILLE, LA -- For the 2009 St. James football
team, this spring scrimmage accomplished everything it was setup to do --
find the areas of strength and find the areas where work is
needed. The Wildcats clearly
seen results in both of these categories. The Wildcats traveled to Scotlandville to take their
first football "quiz" of the 2009 season in the spring scrimmage. With the results now in, the Wildcats will
now move on the their intra-team "Black and Gold" game next week
before wrapping up spring training and moving into the summer program. The key story of this scrimmage for St. James may have
been the amount of plays made by many of the younger and up-and-coming
Wildcats. Sophomore-to-be running back Kenny Armant
provided the biggest offensive play of the day when he dashed around the
entire field in route to a 65-yard touchdown run. The Wildcats' first-unit offense struggled for most of
the night but was able to score when Jaleel Steib plowed in on a 3-yard run. Despite the struggles, the Wildcats offense
did seem to move the ball very efficiently with the pass. Armant also provided
some notable running plays with the first-unit offense. On the defensive side of the ball, St. James played solid
with the exception of giving up 3 big plays; 2 of
which went for Scotlandville's only 2 touchdowns of the day. Both Scotlandville touchdowns came on
screen passes where the Wildcats missed assignments. Scotlandville attempted another screen pass on a
fourth-down play late in the scrimmage, but this time, Wildcat Lionel Dorsey
sniffed it out and timed his hit perfectly to cause an incompletion. The Wildcat defense did provide what would have been a
"two touchdown swing" in a real game when Jabari
Ambrose picked up a fumble on the 2-yard line and scampered 98 yards for a touchdown. It should be noted that Jabari
Ambrose is the younger brother of former Wildcat Luther Ambrose and has been
a starting center on the offensive line since he was in eight grade. After the scrimmage, Coach Gaille
talked to his players about the areas where improvement will
be needed. "If we are to
become the champions we want to be, we have some work to do and it has to
start with the summer program," Coach Gaille
told his players. |
